Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Ever since Earth was formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, the planet has been continuously shaped by dynamic forces. The most significant impact was made by the introduction of life. From the smallest single-cell organism to the most populous cities, living things--especially human beings--have had a profound effect on the planet. As a new millennium begins, conservation efforts are more important than ever for Earth's survival. Authoritative text and dramatic photographs show how our role in shaping the Earth can be just as significant as the massive eruptions of volcanoes or the shifting of huge tectonic plates. GLOSSARY, INDEX.

Customer Reviews:

Review #1: Inforamtive, engaging, splendidly illustrated!
2000-08-16
Shaping The Earth is a superbly designed introduction for your readers to how the Earth was originally formed and then shaped through the subsequent eons of time down to this very day. Dorothy Patent shows how tectonic plates shift continents and creates mountains; the role of volcanoes, glaciers, rivers, and wind in shaping the landscape and geology of Earth. But most fascinating of all is the evolving role living organisms from the first single-cell entities to the profound influence of human beings on the physical landscapes of our planet. Patent's informative, engaging text is splendidly illustrated throughout with color photograph illustrations by William Munoz. Highly recommended for school and community library collections of science books for young readers, Shaping The Earth is enhanced with a glossary of terms, list of recommended books for further study, a roster of relevant websites, and a "student friendly" index.
